2001 setze sich eine Gruppe Menschen aus dem Backlab Umfeld zusammen, um eine gemeinsame Veranstaltung zu organisieren, mit dem Ziel, internationale Musikerinnen und Musiker ins Mühlviertel zu bringen. Die erste Veranstaltung war das sogenannte Zwischenstromfestival, abgehalten in einem leerstehenden Stadel in der Nähe von Weitersfelden. Seit dem gibt es einen Zwischenstromball, ein Zwischenstromfestival und mehrere Zwischenstromspezial - Veranstaltungen pro Jahr.
